  • Language Learning in Virtual Worlds

    Welcome everyone!

The aim of this learning event is to explore and reflect on virtual worlds for language learning and to analyse and discuss the inherent benefits and challenges.

The event consists of a lead-in activity, a short video on some survival Italian and an opportunity to practise the language on Second Life. This will be followed by a reflective task in Second Life and an asynchronous forum discussion.

Before you watch the video, here are a couple of questions to think about:

    • Have you ever studied or taught a language in a virtual world? Was it a positive experience? Why/Why not?
    • If not, would you ever consider learning a language in a virtual world? Why/Why not?
    • What are your feelings and expectations before the Italian lesson in Second Life?

Please post your answers in the discussion forum and comment on each other's responses.

  • Language Lesson

Watch the following video and makes notes on how to:

    • ask for a menu, a coffee, the bill and some water
    • say sparkling and still water
    • ask a taxi driver to take you to a hotel

We will be meeting at 12.00 GMT in Second Life at the Sakura Garden in Holyrood Park to practise what you've learnt.

  • Reflection

From your own experience and reading, and the learning event how effective do you think virtual worlds are for language learning?

What do you see as the benefits of learning a language in a virtual world?

What are the challenges? How can these challenges be overcome?
