We are all culturally embeded somewhere, unless we live on an island. Sometimes that is a nice thought! However, while I agree with you that the global consequences of neoliberalism are getting somewhat extreme, do you think this is the way it is going to be forever? Things are always changing; sometimes there are revolutions, but sometimes change is a slow burn too.

Leveraging bottom up power through grassroots movements has been successful in bringing about change; women's rights at the beginning of the 20th century, civil rights movement in the mid 20th century, marriage equality now. And yet all these groups were still "in" the system they were/are trying to change.

So while the current system is most definitely an assault on our human dignity, how much of that is the result of us being unaware and then once becoming aware, allowing it and being complicit? I'm with Kant, "Dare to Know"!

"Laziness and cowardice are the reasons why such a large part of mankind gladly remain minors all their lives, long after nature has freed them from external guidance. They are the reasons why it is so easy for others to set themselves up as guardians. It is so comfortable to be a minor. If I have a book that thinks for me, a pastor who acts as my conscience, a physician who prescribes my diet, and so on--then I have no need to exert myself. I have no need to think, if only I can pay; others will take care of that disagreeable business for me."

I wonder if the reason we choose not to break free from the system is that it is just too damned comfortable, even when we know it is in our long term, and even short term interest to change. And for the top 1-2%, well, who knows, they might lag a bit, but possibly they too will adapt, although probably not from suddenly becoming enlightened!
