I hope you are all going to make today's session at 13:00.
We will discuss 'alt metrics' - or more correctly the development and use of indicators based on 'digital' sources.
Please be ready to comment on the scientific publishers article and Timo Hanney video, The questions for todays discussion and the discussion board are:
- What challenges were faced by the firms in the two cases of digital publishing innovation? What can we learn from the stories Nature and Digital Science, as well as PLOS, as they try to build a business based on digital science and altmetrics?
Please be prepared to talk about altmetrics in your field of work
- What are the weaknesses in existing indicators and metrics that are leading people think of alternatives (cost, transparency, reliability or weakness etc)
- What sort of alternative indicators and metrics are being proposed, why, and my whom?
- What might/are the challenges of getting these accepted - e.g. according to criteria of Scottish National Indicators.
- Are businesses selling services and products based on these altmetrics to public bodies?
Will will finish with a broader discussion on the potential for new indicators based on digital sources of various types, and the challenges faced in bringing them in to use.
In the course EUDACT, we will be exploring some of these methods in more depth.
