Dear Leah,

This does not sound surprising - but an excellent opportunity for you. Make sure that they understand the link between social media, paid and targeted communication and 'egovernment', rather than just focusing on organic social media engagement. They need to think about the purpose of the communication using social media, and how they will measure its outcomes and impact - how any social media audience needs to be understood (e.g. on Twitter it is a very messy audience) - and where it leads to.  Are they trying to build positive communities/networks of action, or doing negative firefighting?  There are lots of interesting issues in how a senior civil servant especially can use social media - especially supporting those doing positive things, engaging with networks of elites, pointing towards other online and offline processes of engagement and support.  Social media engagement is not something that is just layered on top of business as usual!

I would love to here what you are going to tell them, their concerns, and any constructive actions you persuade them to take.

Any help you needs, just ask.

Friday is 13:00-14:00 as usual.

James
