IPII question

Hi Susie,

Apologies in advance if this is a silly question.....

Even though the trial we are to base the poster on has been completed/published, for assignment purposes we are to pretend that it is in planning stage and would benefit from PPI....is this correct?

Also.....is it acceptable to base IPII on the same trial as referred to in IPI?

Best wishes,

Gillian

Hi Gillian,

Thanks for your questions (which, by the way are not silly questions).

Yes, you are correct, for the poster you can pretend that it is in the planning stage and yes it is acceptable to base IPII on the same trial as referred to in IPI.

Thanks

Susie

Dear Susie,

I would like to know if we could base IP2 on a trial which has also published how patients/public were involved. As far as I understand, the main goal of IP2 is to create a poster and not to develop a PPI strategy from scratch as we did on IP1.

Could you please confirm if we can create the poster from published PPI?

Hi Valeria,

Yes, you can create a poster from the published PPI, though base it on as if you were in the planning stages

and trying to attract patients to work with you.

Thanks

Susie

Hi Susie,

thanks for your reply smile

I have another question, hope it's the last one: Is there any specifications regarding size or orientation of the poster?

Thanks,

Valeria

Hi Valeria,

There are no specifications regarding the size or orientation of the poster.

Just make sure that the poster is prepared in Powerpoint, is no longer than 1000 in length and that you cover the four criteria's noted in the assignment specifications (Introduction, Text, Design/layout, General presentation and impact).

Thanks

Susie

Hi Susie,

How should we reference for IPII?

As we will be designing a poster to attract patients and public the references will be more about text, design and layout as well as the clinical aspects of the study. Should the sources used for design etc be put in a bibliography?

Thanks

Susie

Hi Donna,

Thanks for your query. No, you don't need to reference design sources.

Thanks

Hi Susie,

The word count for this assignment is 1000 words.

I am finding it difficult to write 900-1100 (1000+/-10%) on a poster without making it looking academic and text-heavy, when it is supposed to be aimed at public/patients.

Can I just confirm that the lowest word limit is definitely 900w for this poster assignment, and provision of less than this will be penalised by deducing marks. Is this correct?

Best wishes,

Gillian

word count

Dear Susie,

I am glad Gillian asked that question.

I read that a good poster should have between 300-500 words and it should be appropriate for the audience.

I started with 500 and it seemed too much so I then decided to remove lots of unnecessary words. So, now I am under 500 for sure... I feel that if I have to increase it to 900 to comply with the 1000+/-10% no one will read my poster and collaborate with my study sadsad

Could you please confirm if there is a minimum required amount of words?

Thanks,

Valeria

Hi Gillian and Valeria,

Thanks for your email.

Just to confirm for the Poster assignment (IP II - option 2), there is no minimum word count.

The maximum word count is 1000 words.

Hope this clarifies your queries.

Thanks

Susie

Hi Susie,

Ah okay this really does help. Although I wish I had asked sooner so I hadn't wasted time trying desperately to bulk it up to 900 (....with meaningful words ofcourse smile)

It's not until I got to around 600 that I realised it would be near impossible to fit 1000 on a page (for patients). This exception to the normal word count rules could be made clearer for next time.

Many thanks,

Gillian

Hi,

Is it possible to submit the poster on a Word document as I'm unable to add all of the content to one Powerpoint slide?

Thanks

Hi Donna and everyone

You can submit on Word, but Powerpoint provides much better tools for design and you should be able to set it up to take all your content. In Powerpoint, you set the size of the slide by clicking on the design tab, then slide size, then customize - size depends on preference and poster orientation. There are details in the wiki guide we referenced in your assignment spec - this is the specific page

https://www.wiki.ed.ac.uk/display/HowTowiki/Step+1.+Set+up+page+orientation+and+page+size

Hope that helps

Best wishes

Dear Allison and Susie,

Turnitin does not appear to be available to submit IP2. I would like to submit my project as soon as possible as I will be traveling from lunch time tomorrow.

I would appreciate it if you could investigate.

Best wishes

Hi Susie,

I find that after saving a powerpoint file, sometimes when I go to re-open it, the picture formatting has slightly changed. For this reason, after making a poster on powerpoint, is it okay to save and submit it to turnitin as a pdf file (to ensure the formatting doesn't change)?

Best wishes,

Gillian

Hi Gillian,

Unfortunately no PDF's can be submitted to Turnitin.

You mention that the formatting of the picture changes when saving, may I suggest you look into how the picture is embedded and saved within PowerPoint. Further tips on working with images, can be found here:

http://www.docs.is.ed.ac.uk/skills/documents/3818/3818.pdf

Alternatively, you can submit a WORD document if you wish.

With kind regards

Susie

Thank-you this has helped!

Apologies in advance as I have yet another question.....do you have any guidance on how to reference an image from the web?

Hi Gillian,

Please find below some guidance:

How to reference an image from a website

If you have found the image from Google images, you should be able to trace the source of the image by clicking on it and should cite the original source.

Examples for Harvard style referencing:

Lectica Inc, (2014). Validity. [image] Available at: https://dts.lectica.org/_about/las_reliability_validity.php  [Accessed 19 Oct. 2014].

Bryant, L. R. (2010). Cane toad [Photograph]. Available at:  http://larvalsubjects.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/cane_toad.jpg  [Accessed 8th March 2016]

If there is no named author, put the image title first, followed by the date (if available):

Greater Manchester Congestion Charge [Map]. (2008). Available at: http://www.maptube.org/map.aspx?mapid=239%20[Accessed 8th March 2016]

In the text of the assignment, remember to cite as you would for any other reference (Author surname, date) next to the image.

Thanks

Susie & Allison

Dear Susie and Allison,

Do we put the title page content for IP II in a power point slide or that should be in a word document. If that is the case would we submit a word document and a power point document or can we place all these on power point slides.

Thank you,

Irene

Dear Irene,

For IP II, poster submission, just pop the title page content in a PowerPoint slide, along with your poster you have created - so placing them all in PowerPoint.

Thanks
