The ability to access Moodle via the official Moodle app has never been switched on in the University instance of Moodle. The Moodle service team have tested it previously and found the functionality to be lacking.

As well as not supporting our various third party plugins (expected) it did not support many of Moodle's own core features. Consequently we have put our effort into creating and maintaining a responsive theme which displays and gives full access to most activities and resources in Moodle on mobile devices.

If you are having issues with accessing particular activities or resources on a mobile device please let the service team know by sending details of the issue to IS.Helpline@ed.ac.uk. When you send your email please include the following information:

  1. The device you are using - e.g. iPhone 7, Samsung Galaxy J3, etc.
  2. The operating system it is using - e.g iOS 8.1, Android 7.1.1, Windows 10, etc.
  3. The browser you are using on your device - e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Safari, etc.
  4. The name of the course and the topic holding the activity or resource.
  5. The name of the activity or resource being accessed.

If possible, it would also help to have screenshots from your device illustrating the problem:

Accessing Moodle on a mobile phone

For the best experience of using Moodle we suggest using a PC, laptop or a 8-10" tablet. However if you need to access Moodle on a mobile phone here are some tips to try and enhance your experience.

  1. Rotate your phone. Despite using a responsive theme a few activities in Moodle will display in a format wider than the typical mobile phone screen in portrait mode - e.g. the table displaying the list of threads in a Forum. Rotating your phone should allow you to see the full width of such pages allowing you to make a choice before rotating back to portrait.
  2. Switch the editor to full screen. When composing a blog post, forum post or editing a wiki page, the editor will not fill the full screen - depending on the activity there will be differing levels of padding shown. It is possible to force the editor to display in full screen. To do this click on the very first icon on the toolbar to expand the toolbar then click on the icon with four arrow heads to switch to full screen mode. The available editing area will expand to fill the full width of the screen - remember to click on the first icon again to reduce the toolbar and give you more editing space. You will also have to close full screen mode so that you can actually post your changes.
  3. Hide the navigation menu and block drawer. The left hand side navigation menu and the right hand side block drawer should hide automatically on phones but may not on tablets. to hide these areas click on the cross at the top of these areas and give more screen space to your course content.
