Section outline

  • No single objective measure of coaching effectiveness can be identified which is appropriate in all coaching situations, but coaching effectiveness is a goal for the majority of coaches. So what are the components of effective coaching practice?

PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU WILL BE ASKED TO VIDEO YOURSELF COACHING AND THEN ANALYSE THE RESULTS. YOU WILL NEED 20 MINUTES OF FOOTAGE - PLEASE TAKE THIS FROM ACTUAL COACHING NOT WARM UPS OR COOL DOWNS. IT WOULD BE USEFUL IF YOU RECORDED THIS FOOTAGE PRIOR TO WEEK 5.

    • This video lecture discusses coaching effectiveness. It is advised to read the provided texts before listening to this.

    • This folder contains some readings to help engage with the complexity of coaching effectiveness.

    • This is your opportunity to analyse your own coaching behaviours. Using the Lacy and Darst Arizona State University Observation Instrument (ASUOI) you should record and quantify your coaching behaviours. The ASUOI recording sheet plus the explanation of the categories is provided for your information. Also the original article - please note some categories have been updated and we are not following their protocol to the letter.

Once you have completed this task you should post your totals for each category along with the sport you were coaching on the sheet. This sheet will be added to the discussion board so everyone can access. There will be some selected 'other' scores to make the analysis more powerful.

Your report should include the following:

Analysis of results  from all participants using appropriate statistical tests (for example, t-test, word cloud, descriptive stats)

Discussion of the results in relation to:

      • Current published research
      • Implications for coaching process, especially practice length and design
      • Practical applications for coaching, specifically effective coaching and effective practice
