This section will provide an introduction to the understanding of the coaching process. The coaching process underpins the business of coaching. It is the job of the coach to manage the various parts of the process to form an effective strategy for improving sports performance. Is the coaching process a ‘one size fits all’ development or is it dependent upon the coaching context?
-
This is a short Video Lecture providing some background to the coaching process.
This file is saved as an mp4 so it should play on both Windows and Mac machines.

This is a brief synopsis of the Collaborate chat this week
-
Models are a means of representing both the structure and function of the coaching process. They show the differing dimensions of the process and the ways in which they can interact. There are a number of issues surrounding models, for example, a two dimensional structure, and some researchers and coach educators consider modelling the coaching process to be unrepresentative of actual coaching practice.
-
Brief Lecture examining selected Models of Coaching
-
Another, but distinctly different, type of model to consider.
-
There are various effective coaching models which some coaches choose to use to structure their coaching sessions which can be helpful to guide a logical sequence and provide a framework for your coaching session. Using a model can help in a number of ways:
- It helps to provide a purpose to the session by defining an outcome at the beginning preventing it becoming a 'chat' with no clear purpose.
- It can also be a prompt to ensure that the session stays 'on track'.
- It can be used to help the planning process
- It can help the process of self-reflection after the session
We have examined a number of models but this short assignment requires you to either:
- Develop your own coaching model based on your individual circumstances
- Evaluate an existing coaching model that suits your individual circumstances
You should:
- Include the coaching model as an Appendix (not included in word count)
- Explain your rationale for developing your own model or selecting an existing model
- Refer to current research findings
- Include a reference list (not included in word count)
- Include a word count
-

Identifying particular characteristics (qualities and abilities) of successful sports coaches could offer other coaches help in improving their performance. Participants will undertake a task to appreciate the complexity of the coaching process and principles of good practice.
Communication is one of the many skills a coach should possess
-
This contains some information and a task to be completed
-
No single objective measure of coaching effectiveness can be identified which is appropriate in all coaching situations, but coaching effectiveness is a goal for the majority of coaches. So what are the components of effective coaching practice?
PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU WILL BE ASKED TO VIDEO YOURSELF COACHING AND THEN ANALYSE THE RESULTS. YOU WILL NEED 20 MINUTES OF FOOTAGE - PLEASE TAKE THIS FROM ACTUAL COACHING NOT WARM UPS OR COOL DOWNS. IT WOULD BE USEFUL IF YOU RECORDED THIS FOOTAGE PRIOR TO WEEK 5.
-
This video lecture discusses coaching effectiveness. It is advised to read the provided texts before listening to this.
-
This folder contains some readings to help engage with the complexity of coaching effectiveness.
-
This is your opportunity to analyse your own coaching behaviours. Using the Lacy and Darst Arizona State University Observation Instrument (ASUOI) you should record and quantify your coaching behaviours. The ASUOI recording sheet plus the explanation of the categories is provided for your information. Also the original article - please note some categories have been updated and we are not following their protocol to the letter.
Once you have completed this task you should post your totals for each category along with the sport you were coaching on the sheet. This sheet will be added to the discussion board so everyone can access. There will be some selected 'other' scores to make the analysis more powerful.
Your report should include the following:
Analysis of results from all participants using appropriate statistical tests (for example, t-test, word cloud, descriptive stats)
Discussion of the results in relation to:
- Current published research
- Implications for coaching process, especially practice length and design
- Practical applications for coaching, specifically effective coaching and effective practice

This short video lecture examines the various roles of a coach and the different ways in which these roles can be viewed.
-
This folder contains some readings to support learning around the role of the coach.

-
Coaching has been described as a decision-making process
The video below is a light-hearted look at the process of decision-making - obviously not related to sport or coaching but there are a lot of parallels.
So how does this relate to decision making in coaching. First we need to understand a little more about the process of decision making.
-
More information relating to Decision Making in Sport
-
This assessment examines some of the research around decision making.
As coaches gain experience and increase their sport specific knowledge, it becomes increasingly more important to develop memory strategies to store, retain and then recall the acquired knowledge. Generally speaking the expert coach is able to “predict” the most appropriate play in a competitive situation under time constraint.
You will see a number of video clips of sports situations – the action will be stopped – you will need to select from a list what you think happened next. The clip will then be continued – you will note whether you were correct or not. You will also be asked whether you consider the action to be the most appropriate in the circumstances.
Once you have completed this task you will be asked to post your results online, whether as a screen shot or a list.
Your report should include the following:
Your personal results in relation to an analysis of all results using appropriate statistical tests
Discussion of the results in relation to:
- Current published research
- Implications for coaching process
- Practical applications for coaching
