Surprised by the eco-footprint results

Ok, so I'm the first to admit that I am far from 'green'.  Despite being a vegan I'm conscious that living in Singapore where absolutely everything has to be shipped here makes it nearly impossible to be environmentally responsible (and I dare not mention our national addiction to air conditioning!).

However, my two biggest sins - environmentally speaking - appears to be my addiction to air travel and my gas guzzling SUV.   It's difficult to imagine how I might reduce the amount of air travel, given my work and family commitments - but I will make a point to clicking the 'carbon offsetting' button next time I book a flight.

As for my SUV - I have to say, I just love it, and can't bear to give up my comfort and convenience.    In Singapore we are required to buy a Certificate of Entitlement before purchasing a car.  There is an auction process that sets the price for various categories of vehicle, and an unfortunate side effect of market forces is that the differential between small eco-friendly (approx $88k) and luxury cars ($90K), pushes buyers towards larger engined luxury models where the cost of the COE is a smaller percentage of the total.  So despite our densely populated city living, you'll see a disproportionate number of SUVs and high-end European cars.  On the other hand, I always changed my car every three years (at least) but given that COEs are valid for 10 years, I do intend to keep my car for longer than I would normally.  Hopefully that counts for something?
