Expectations

I'm really excited about the chance to learn in SL. I wonder how we are going to learn. I imagine a kind of TPR approach would work well. But are there props in SL?

Would I have the physical control to do it- I often crash into objects and people smile

The intimacy of a small group in a relaxing environment would also work well for simple practice of the basics, and allow for peer learning too. Hmmm, I am curious.

I also wonder if and how culture will (could) be dealt with in this experience.

Can't wait!

Yes I'm keen for this experience too. I think SL could provide some 'cushioning' in terms of the nervousness that people experience when starting out with learning a new language- although I have have to develop my knowledge of animating my avatar, for all those paralingual and cultural aspects of a language. I think the SL setting could be significant as a driver and engagement. Being encouraged to develop your avatars 'cultural persona' could be of interest.

It has been noted (Boellstorff) that SL contains the possibility of cultural logics, and so this really does open up the horizons of possibility.
