Reflection on SL language learning session

Thanks Clare for the SL language teaching session last night. Really all that I intend to do here is to summize some of the point that were made at the session, as this was a fairly comprehensive and cogent reflective aspect to the event.

I think that you demonstrated quite effectively the potential of SL in terms of providing a conducive setting for both language instruction and more extensive (quasi and actually) independent language learning activities (role play, learner centred). There was great demonstration of both the use of a calming, pleasant and perceived as safe, virtual environment in order for participants to 'suspend belief' and let their imaginations roll, in terms of role and situation (place: Italy, Trattoria Toscana). The spatiality and 'animate' intentionality of the SL space and avatars, combined to provide a perceived authentic context and setting. Also you showed how it is possible to scaffold and even coach without it feeling intrusive or disruptive to the learner and flow of the activity and therefore learning. There was interesting discussion about how potential events could make use of relevant SL locations (Osteria', Pizzaria?) and so on. We also discussed possible issues of usability- simultaneous role plays and limited audio channels, although account upgrades, SL land ownership and other technical solutions may be possible here.

From a learners perspective I enjoyed the experience, and appreciated your follow up with the additional vocabulary arising from the session- this is certainly essential and great practice.

Thanks for an inspiring session, all more so as this is an area of real professional interest, and additionally could form a preference from a learners perspective in terms of developing my Japanese, especially with the limitations on my time!
