Creativity

What incentive is there for professional sports coaches especialy football to think outside the box and be creative if they work in a punitive environment where failure brings rapid sacking?

Very limited scope for changing philosophies when football is very quick to sack the manager! Creativity example - the class of 92 from Man U purchasing a football club from the lower leagues? This allowed them to try and implement their own ideas in a less demanding setting?

Completely agree with both of these points - any thoughts on creativity/innovation in sports other than football? How have you been creative in your coaching?

When I was coaching swimming I was in the fortunate position of having more swimmers than lane space available. We could not negotiate extra time from the LA so we needed to come up with another solution. After thinking about this problem from a number of angles I actually came up with the solution of adding an extra lane. We had 5 fairly wide lanes but actually the pool would be able to accommodate a 6th lane. Personally I did not see this as creative - merely problem solving - but other coaches said they would never have considered this approach.

Have any of you done anything similar? Creativity does not need to be the 'eureka' moment as I said in the lecture.

Not sure if it's creative or just common sense... our 1st team girls at school have had a great year, best statistical year on record. Unfortunately were dumped out the cup recently and have since lost their mojo. Very poor training session last Thursday afternoon and a game against the team who had knocked us out in the semi final.. I wasn't filled with optimisn if i'm totally honest!

We usually have a pre game meeting on Friday morning to go over the weeks sessions and some key stuff for the game, which we then recap pre game. They also set their own individual line goals (DEF/MID/FWD) for the game so they're taking ownership of their own performance.

Last week, I decided to cancel the meeting. I felt like their hearts weren't in it and it would be pointless.

Instead...they arrived normal time on Saturday and I sent the captain in to the changing room with my iPad to play "Heads Up" which is essentially charades. Cue laughing and giggling for 10 mins. I then got them out to warm-up and after that gave them the starting team and our defensive setup and left them to it... they seemed enthused and happy. What followed was their best performance of the year and a 4-1 win.

The idea behind sport is fun and enjoyment and that carried through from the game they played pre game.

Now i need to think of ideas to keep their excitement level up

In dance it depends what kind of dance and what age group and creativity is one of the skills, necessary for a dance teacher and choreographer.

I had good experience to give some free time in the class for  free dancing to songs of actual charts, to adapt the dance movements to popular music instead  the classical  music. Another possibility for youth and young adult dancers is to create their choreography as group choreography, where everybody can bring its idea into to group.

This a some tools to change the perception of the student dancer to the traditional form of their performing art.

Additionally as mainly female dancers are forming  the dance  groups, incentive outside the performance are mostly welcome, like a  theatre visit, watching other dance performance.

I agree Chris and pp 97 & 98 of Occhino about talking to other coaches is interesting.
