While there are many texts from the list belwo that students may find useful the following 3 are recommended.  The first is the only one that is not aviable electronically.

1. Robertson, J & Timperley, H. [eds] [2011] Leadership and Learning. Los Angeles: Sage.  Thist is the only text from the course that is not available electronically.  This very readable book unpacks the key concepts and practices around leadership for learning and is highly recommended.  It sees 3 themes at the core of Leadership  and Learning and these are:

  •  empowering relationships
  • patterns of leadership distribution
  • and how leadership contributes to improvements in teaching and learning

2. MacBeath, J. & Dempster, N. (eds) [2009] Connecting Leadership and Learning: principles for practice. London: RoutledgeThis text is edited by two of the leading experts on Leadership for Learning and has at its heart 5 key principles for effective leadership for learning:

  • A focus on learning
  • An environment for learning
  • A learning dialogue
  • Shared leadership
  • Accountability-internal and external.

3. Townsend, T.  & MacBeath, J.  (Eds.) [2011] international handbook of leadership for learning (pp. 1-25). Netherlands: Springer.  This can be accessed at Townsend and MacBeath.This huge electronic handbook is a great source for dipping into and contains articles reflecting a variety of Leadership for Learning contexts from around the world.   It investigates both the theoretical and contextual aspects of leadership for learning while drilling down to how leaders affect and support learning.
