Reflective Activity

Use the following questions to guide and inform your Reflective Journal Blog entry

Taysum [2010] argues that ‘Key to education is the knowledge chosen to be imparted to learners, and the knowledge that the learners access, use and transform.’ [2010: 14].

  • What are the skills, attitudes, dispositions and knowledge that you think should be imparted to young people in schools in the 21st century?
  • What do you think are the implications of your choices, if any, on the leadership practices required to achieve them?

Optional Activity

Sir Ken Robinson argues that the existing way that we are educating pupils is not good enough.  He would like to see a complete change in our system with an emphasis on creativity.    You can see a Ted Talk by Ken Robinson at: http://www.ted.com/talks/ken_robinson_says_schools_kill_creativity.html

To aid your reflections:

  • What are your thoughts on Ken Robinson’s views?
  • In Scottish secondary schools middle leaders with subject department responsibilities are expected to rigorously meet national exam requirements [and are held accountable for the exam performance of their departments], while at the same time supporting pupil and teacher creativity?  Do you think that this presents problems for the school leaders concerned, and if so, can these be resolved?
