Moodle performance issues

Dear Students,

We are seeing performance issues on Moodle which are manifesting as pages and resources being slow to load and react to button clicks. The issue only seems to occur in the evening from around 1900 to about 2030 BST (GMT +1).

As part of our investigations into the issue, last night we turned off some of the background processes in Moodle to observe the effect on the delivery of Moodle pages. Unfortunately this had no effect on the issue which arose again. The sequence of events were as follows:

  •     At 1900 Moodle stops working.
  •     By 1940 Moodle returns but performance is slow to the point of being unusable for some users.
  •     By 2040 Moodle returns to normal operation with pages being served as expected.

The test indicates that the problem does not lie with Moodle itself and points to an issue in the wider infrastructure hosting the application. Another system on the same infrastructure was also reported to have issues last night strengthening this case.

We continue to investigate the cause and will update you when we have more information.

Apologies for any inconvenience.

Wesley
