Dear Students,
Welcome to the next module of Using Digital Research. In this module you will be expanding your knowledge of a range of research techniques in the digital domain, from the earliest studies of bulletin boards and email, to the latest mobile and crowd techniques.
This week there will be an introductory lecture on Collaborate (Wednesday 13:00), where I will introduce various research methods.
The reading for you this week is on the ethics of digital and online research. this will make you aware of some of the issues you may need to consider in commissioning, designing or using research and online data.
Please be ready to comment and discuss the issues during the class on Wednesday.
There will be 3 assessments
- A short (up to 400 words) reflective summary of an issue of your choosing related to ethics of research - either on a topic such as privacy, or looking at ethics related to a particular research method or data source.
- A Presentation in pairs in Week three on Open Data - yeti can choose to explore and critically review an open data project - either around the release of data, or the use of open data.
- An essay on any of the topics covered in the class, but you can also explore novel research methods such as serious games, etc
I look forward to the course.
Please do not hesitate to ask questions, and please, use the Reflective discussion board to summarise articles, discuss topics, ask questions of the group etc.
You can post readings and links you find on the discussion board, or in to the course Reading Wiki.
There is also a Facebook group (Using Digital Research) that we use to post articles from newspapers etc.
On Technical Issues - if you have problems with Collaborate and firewalls, please contact myself or Ben immediately, so we can get this sorted out.
best regards
James
